Roy Moore Lobster

39 Bearskin Neck
Rockport, MA 01966

Here we’re again. Same guys and busier than in September when we last visited. I raved about it: the fresh seafoods and handsome store bakers/cookers. This time, I see many Asians. At one point, nearly every table are occupied by Asians, many speak Chinese.

Two historical houses

Beverly is a small town in MA. It used to be a kid sister (Bass River Side) to the port town Salem, 3 miles to its south.

There are a few houses worth visiting.

Cabot House at 117 Cabot Street, was built in 1781 by/for John Cabot. Since 1892 it’s the headquarters of Historic Beverly.

Hale Farm @ 39 Hale Street, was built in 1694 by/for Rev. John Hale. Witchcraft was practiced and or involved. The descendants of Hale then Bancroft owned the house till 1937. Since then the owner is the Beverly Historical Society.

Riverside Cemetery

274 Main Street
Fairhaven, MA

During our trip to New England, we also visited this cemetery.

It was founded in 1850 by Warren Delano, maternal grandfather of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945). 20 some relatives were buried here, except FDR and his wife Eleanor (1884-1962).

Stonington, CT

The town of Stonington, settled in 1649 in CT, is very charming: stone is SEEN everywhere. Population 18,335 (2020 census). Most photos are taken at the house of Captain Nathaniel Palmer (1799-1877), which was built in 1852-54, a museum now.

There is Stonington Island in Antarctic, named after Cape. Nathaniel Palmer (1799-1877) when he saw the Antarctic Peninsula, the northernmost part of mainland Antarctica on 1820.11.17 on his sloop 单桅帆船 Hero. That area would be known as Palmer Land nowadays (wiki: Graham Land in UK, O’Higgins Land in Chile and Tierra de San Martín in Argentina). He was a seal hunter and explorer.  Stonington Island was used as the site for the East Base of US Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-41).

The Lobster Bar

31 Bowens Wharf
Newport, RI 02840

Probably will return.

The view is great. Boats with boatload of tourists like myself in and out of the harbor from both sides. The wide, thick wooden floor gave the place an enormous charm and warmth, inside and out. Decent service with average food. The house white Crane Lake Chardonnay is delicious.

We had Littleneck clams (won’t have it again), grilled shrimp (ok) and lobster roll (decent).

New England, 2021

Another research trip to New England, from Thursday July 29 to Sunday August 1.

We packed many agendas but as the trip progresses, we also came up on some unexpected discoveries, pleasantly surprised, indeed.

Trip to the unknown!

My itinerary:

  1. Thu, 7.29 Newport: Lighthouse; art museum Lobster Bar; tennis hall of fame
  2. Fri, 7.30 Rockport: Fairhaven cemetery; the Ice Cream Store; Moore LobsterChristian Sands @ Liu
  3. Sat, 7.31  BostonBunker Hill Museum @ Charlestown; cemetery; Yunnan Rice Noodle; Chart House on Long Wharf;
  4. Sun, 8.01 American Heritage MuseumSpringfield Armory @ Springfield

On the way home we can’t find a restaurant that open on Sunday: all due to shortage of staff. Not sure if we would coexist with the covid-19 pandemic onward.

Newport Tower @ Touro Park

Adjacent to Newport Art Museum is the Newport Tower, a mid-17th century stone mill. In the same park, there are two statues: Commodore Matthew C. Perry (1794-1858) and William Ellery Channing (1780-1842). The black and white Perry is from LOC.

The bakery 中关村茶点部

福利楼 fulilou in Zhongguancun also housed a bakery, 中关村茶点部. I took the first photo during my visit in 2014. The rest were taken by Aileen, thank you.

Someone wrote about it in 2017.

Lighthouse @ Stonington

7 Water St
Stonington, CT

This was the first lighthouse museum in US, opened in 1927, after government sold it in 1925 for $3,650, to the Stonington Historical Society. One ticket entitles you to visit the Palmer house too.
